JERICO TRACY - ART CONSULTANT, DIRECTOR & CURATOR

Please give us a brief introduction of yourself Jerico?

I am an art consultant, curator and the gallery director of Jerico Contemporary. I live with my husband and two children, Anouk and Émile.

How would you describe your personal style and key wardrobe pieces?

I would describe my personal style as classic with a side of the romantic. I tend to opt for classic pieces that will stand the test of time and items that I can wear regularly as part of a capsule wardrobe. My key wardrobe staples would be a white t-shirt, pair of jeans or trousers, trench coat and little (and mid and long) black dress. I have quite a minimal palette so tonally most of my pieces go together, which is helpful getting out the door in the morning with two toddlers in tow.

Can you talk us through your career as an art consultant, curator and gallerist and how Jerico Contemporary come to fruition?

I have always been drawn to the history of art and how it has shaped culture throughout time. I knew very early on that I wanted to work in art and after working in the industry for ten years; I opened Jerico Contemporary. It began as a curatorial platform that showcased emerging artists as well as an art consultancy. Rather than a fixed address it was - at first - an itinerant gallery, constantly moving and transforming diverse spaces into temporary exhibitions. It became apparent quite quickly that I needed a permanent space rather quickly as we started representing artists and holding stock. At one point my tiny apartment in Centennial Park had almost a hundred artworks in it, so it was time. After looking for almost a year, I found the beautiful Wooloomooloo space and opened the gallery in 2018. We are opening a new space next year, and at the moment the focus is on the art consultancy side of the business.

What does a typical week in your life look like? What are your non-negiotiable rituals?

What I love about what I do is that each week looks different, and there is no typical week. This week I had two artist studio visits, went to three exhibitions, installed an off-site show I curated with Australian artist Paige Northwood in Martin Place, a restaurant in Cronulla, and a private client's residence in Bellevue Hill. I have Thursdays off with my children, and we went to Ballet in the morning and the Australian Museum in the afternoon. My morning coffee is non-negotiable, I have to have it first thing (i’m often waiting for the cafe to open) and I need to swim in the ocean at least a few times a week even through winter. It’s my favourtie thing to do.

Can you talk us through your most treasured artist's exhibition to date at Jerico Contemporary?

There have been so many it’s impossible to choose just one. I would say that Jedda-Daisy Culley’s first exhibition with the gallery was one of the most ambitious - we hung two 3 metre weavings from the ceiling that completely enveloped the gallery space and transformed it into this amazing woven interior. We had a lot of fun putting that together. Another exhibition that is dear to my heart was one we did with Luke Chiswell where everything was large-scale and vivid pink. We installed a 3.4 metre sculpture in the front window that almost (but didn’t) touch the roof.

Who are you most inspired by?

At the moment my greatest inspiration comes from my three year old daughter. She is truly obsessed with painting and drawing and has come to it all on her own. Her mark making and the way in which she creates and considers her compositions has really inspired me and has taken me back to the intuitive origin of artists.

Current favourite artist?

Anna Weyant is a young Canadian artist who’s uncanny, muted figurative paintings have me constantly in awe.

 Architecture inspiration right now?

The recent return of the Chanel S/S 25 show in the Grand Palais had me falling in love with Beaux-Arts architectural style all over again.

How do you plan to fulfill your creative desires for 2024?

Carving out a little more time for myself so I can finalise a few projects that I have been working on for the past few months.
